2014 Fall Instructors

Our instructors at Prairie Center are experts in the field of Book Arts and printmaking. They have a love for what they do and want to share that with our community.
 
Cathie Crawford working in her studio
Cathie Crawford has concentrated on the color reduction woodcut since completing an MFA in 1987 from Bradley University.  Her work has been included in over three hundred exhibitions, fifty-five juried national shows and fifteen international juried exhibitions.  Crawford has won thirty-five awards at both the national and regional level.  Her woodcuts have been exhibited in 21states as well as France, Poland, Saudi Arabia, and the United Kingdom.  Crawford’s prints are included in private and corporate collections in eight countries.  The Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, DC selected Plane Magic for acquisition.

Robert Rowe is dedicated to exploring the creative dimensions of the book form along with preserving the craft of fine printing and binding. His long involvement with letterpress printing and book arts has been shaped by over 35 years practicing and teaching art and design at the university level. He is currently professor of graphic design and design history at Bradley University. Mr. Rowe holds an MFA from Indiana University and has studied bookbinding and letterpress printing at the American Academy of Bookbinding and at the Penland School of Crafts.

Backspace is a center for new ideas in a radically changing world. We provide an outlet for creative expression that is integral to a healthy society, and promote civic engagement locally and globally. We are dedicated to fostering innovative, risk-taking contemporary art and cultural scholarship through exhibitions, lectures, and other events and programming. Our space is a forum for exhibiting, discussing, and interpreting works ranging from traditional plastic arts to performance and new media. We are committed to expanding the cultural vocabulary within central Illinois while actively engaging in the myriad discourses within contemporary art.
